ECG and Cardiac Monitoring in Bristol

If you’ve been advised to have an ECG for a medication review, pre-surgical assessment, or routine cardiac monitoring, The Independent Nurse provides fast, professional testing at our Southmead clinic in Bristol. Our experienced, NMC-registered nurses deliver a calm, supportive service, ensuring accurate results and a positive patient experience.

We offer accessible, nurse-led cardiac monitoring to support safe prescribing, pre-medication assessments, and general heart health checks. For patients requiring enhanced options, our partner GPs, The Bristol Practice, also provide clinics that combine ECG with cardiac auscultation and full ECG interpretation, offering a comprehensive pathway tailored to your needs.

Our ECG services include:

• ECG Recording – Performed by our NMC-registered nurses in clinic. Results can be securely shared with you or your referrer.

Enhanced options (via our Partner GPs):

• ECG + Cardiac Auscultation – An ECG test with a GP-led heart examination (auscultation).

• ECG + Cardiac Auscultation + Interpretation – A complete assessment with GP interpretation of your ECG alongside auscultation.

These enhanced services are available on specific clinic days in partnership with our GP collaborators, much like a vaccination clinic. Please enquire for further information.

Result handling: All results can be provided directly to you, or securely shared with your referring clinician if required.

• You do not need a referral to book an ECG with us.
• This is not an emergency service. If you are unwell or experiencing chest pain or shortness of breath, please call 999 or visit your nearest A&E.

Before your ECG

• We’ll confirm your reason for attending (e.g. medication review, pre-surgical assessment, general cardiac health) and any relevant medications.
• Loose-fitting clothing is recommended, but no special preparation is required.

During the ECG

• Small electrodes will be placed on your chest, wrists, and ankles.
• You’ll lie still while the tracing is recorded. The test itself usually takes around 10 minutes.
• Depending on your booking, you may also have:
  
  • Cardiac auscultation – your heart sounds will be examined by one of our partner GPs.
  • ECG interpretation – a GP will provide a clinical reading and interpretation of your tracing.

After your ECG

• You’ll be given a printed copy of your ECG before leaving.
• A secure PDF will be emailed to you for your records.
• If interpretation or auscultation has been included, this will be explained at the appointment and can be sent directly to your GP, consultant, or prescriber.
• For nurse-led ECGs, you are responsible for sharing the results with your GP, specialist, or prescriber.r
